Finishing off 2008 (by the end of January!)…  Hyrum turned 3!  For his birthday, we took him to the Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum.  It was an excellent way to celebrate the special day for this very curious little boy.  His favorite part was the very first "exhibit" with hallow, plastic balls that float on air currents through a maze of transparent tubes.  The kids get to put the balls in and watch them flow all around until they eventually land in one of the various ball catching receptacles.  And then they get to do it again.  Very exciting.  We had a hard time convincing him to leave that and see what else was in the museum.  His other favorite part was the mini-gas station.

Every time Hyrum opened the little door to put a ball in, air would come out of the tube and blow in his face.

Playing in the water area

We let him play for a few hours and then were able to convince him to leave pretty easily (we were worried he really wouldn’t want to leave) because there were escalators on the way to the car.  After dinner, we invited some family over for present opening and cake and root beer float eating.  Hyrum loves both ice cream and root beer.

A couple of things about what Hyrum is like right now:

First a side note: He tried to put this shirt on by stepping into it and pulling it up like pants a couple of days ago, which is why the collar is too big.

He is very curious and inquisitive.  His nursery leader called him their "little engineer."  For example:  He likes to play with the vacuum, only besides pushing it around, he also likes to turn it upside down so he can see what happens on the underside when he turns the wheels.   He asks a lot of questions, as I mentioned here before.

Hyrum is very talkative and social.  He loves to be with other people, especially other kids.  He doesn’t like to do anything alone for very long.  He even wants me there if he is just watching a show.  He thrives on attention and interaction.

Hyrum is very fun and loves to laugh and dance and be silly.  He brings a lot of fun to our lives.

Pictures of Hyrum from last January and Febraury .  He’s grown so much!

I have procrastinated writing this post because I wanted to write something extra special and it just wasn’t coming to me.  What can I say about how very lucky I am, about how I have the wonderful blessing of being married to such a good, kind, hard working, loving husband?  Or about the incredible comfort of being married to my best friend, knowing that he will be there, that we will be there for each other, come what may?   And then there are all the reasons that he is such a great husband that I didn’t even know about him before we got married.  Since we got married, I have often found myself wondering “How do you know these things?”  It’s things like taking a computer apart and putting it back together, doing repairs around the house, building wood furniture, even cooking, sewing on a button, and cleaning the house in less than half the time it would have taken me.

I’m afraid I can’t do justice to how blessed I am.  But here is what we did to celebrate our fifth anniversary.  We hope we Annie will let us do something more soon (I think she’s getting there).

But for now, since Annie still won’t allow me out of her presence for more than a few hours, we broke things up.  We went to a movie in the morning and then in the evening we went to Salt Lake for dinner.  We went to the Garden Restaurant (since it costs half as much as the Roof restaurant and still has a marvelous view) at Temple Square.  We had some very yummy food and enjoyed time together without any worry about the kids.  Adam gave me a sweet card and I had to read it quickly without thinking too much about it so as not to cry in front of the other diners (they pack ‘em in close there).  After dinner we meandered down to Temple Square and enjoyed the Christmas lights as much as we could without freezing.  Adam took some pictures of me with my “I’m freezing” face.  And unfortunately we don’t have any pictures of the two of us since Adam was the one behind the camera.

I can’t imagine how much time it must take them to decorate some of these trees.

And then it was back to the kids and the preparations for the next big event… Hyrum’s birthday!

Soon to come (we’ll see how soon) are the posts about our anniversary and Hyrum’s birthday.  I haven’t forgotten that, but I wanted to write about this fun moment while it was fresh in my mind.

….

I was sitting in the kid’s room with Annie when Hyrum came in holding pad of paper (that looks like a clipboard) and a pencil.  He told me, "I need you to get off the scale."  Except then he said, "I need you to get on the scale."  He was being uncharacteristically serious and looked just like a little doctor, studiously reading his clipboard and taking notes on his patient’s condition. (Sorry I don’t have a picture of Hyrum with his studious doctor face, but here are a couple pictures of the side of him you’re more likely to see.)

So I got up and stood on a square pillow on the floor.  After reading my "weight" he scribbled on his paper and said, "Now I need to you to get off the scale."  I stepped off the pillow.  "Okay.  Now I need to listen to your heart with my telescope."  He silently put his pad and pencil down and then stuck his hand on my tummy for about half a second.  I asked him what it sounded like, and he said it sounded like a heart.  He proceeded to take notes on the condition of my heart.  Then he solemnly told me "I need you to get on the scale."  I obeyed and after silently putting down his paper and pencil, he checked my weight again, followed by my height about a third of the way up, which he said was "thirty."  He wrote that down, too, after which he said, "Now you need to exercise."  I asked for some clarification and he struck a yoga-inspired pose, leaning over with arms up in the air like a stork about to take off.  He took notes on my performance and then thanked me for coming and said I could go.  But now it was time for daddy’s appointment.  He opened the door for me and I happily went to retrieve Adam adding that I wanted to observe since I was pretty thrilled to have a son that is already a doctor at the tender age of three.

Halfway through Adam’s appointment, Hyrum realized that he was missing some equipment.  So, he left, instructing Adam that he must stay on the scale while he was gone.  He was pretty adamant about this.  I went to check on him and he had gone down stairs in search of Adam’s telescope (He was actually looking for Adam’s real telescope so that he could use it to "listen" to Adam’s heart.)  I figured, having a doctor make you wait in a less than optimal situation for an unknown amount of time… this was nothing new.  Eventually, with a little persuasion, Hyrum decided to come back without the telescope.  He decided to make due with what he had on hand.  So he listened to Adam’s heart with a sock.  I was somewhat disappointed that Adam wasn’t required to exercise for his check up.  He got off pretty easy.

So I was playing with the lens Laura gave me for Christmas, and once in a while I get a good one.  (It is manual focus with our camera body, so sometimes they come out, and sometimes they don’t.)  Enjoy!
